Boulder Holistic Dentistry

Our practice was founded by Dr. Steve Koral in 1983. Dr. Steve Koral graduated from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1980, and relocated to Boulder, CO to open his practice.

Boulder Holistic Dentistry has been mercury free and mercury safe since it opened its doors in 1983. As an early pioneer in the field of Holistic Dentistry, Dr. Koral testified before the State Legislature and US congress regarding the safety of mercury filling and earned the right for dentists to elect to remove amalgam fillings. He was an integral part of researching and publishing the protocols for amalgam removal and endocal root canals, and has always been a leader in integrating holistic practices in dentistry while maintaining the highest standards that modern dentistry has to offer.

He was a longtime member and Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) and served as its President and Secretary. He was the editor of the Academy website, www.IAOMT.org, and was one of the most published members pertaining to all aspects of dentistry.

In 2011, Dr. Andrea Mustian, a longtime patient and mentee of Dr. Koral, joined the practice.  Dr. Koral sadly passed away May of 2016. Dr. Mustian is strongly committed to preserving the principles and progressive thinking that built the practice 35 years ago.

Our Doctors

Dr. Andrea Mustian, DMD
Harvard School of Dental Medicine

Dr. Andrea Mustian was born and raised in Boulder, CO. She received her B.A degree in Chemistry from St. Olaf College, where she graduated suma cum laude, and her D.M.D from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2011.  Having been raised in Boulder, CO and growing-up as a patient in Dr. Koral’s dental practice, Dr. Mustian has always believed in holistic dentistry and has a special interest in Oral Medicine and Pathology.

She interned at Walter Reed Medical Center in their Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology departments, and earned the Dr. Paul Boyle Award for Excellence in the Field of Oral Pathology from Harvard School of Dental Medicine.  Upon graduation from Dental School she returned to Boulder and was trained in Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART), ozone treatments, and biologically safe ways of performing extractions and root canals under the tutelage of Dr. Koral.

She is very passionate about mercury-free and holistic dentistry, and ultimately maintaining a very high standard of dental care through continuing education, and utilizing the newest techniques and diagnostic equipment.

Despite Dr. Mustian’s attempt to minimize the use of amalgam in Dental School, she was exposed to high levels of mercury during practica.  She became ill, and it became apparent that her poor health was correlated to periods of high mercury exposure.  Having personally experienced the effect amalgam can have on one’s health, Dr. Mustian has great empathy for the chemical sensitivities and medical challenges many of her patients face.  She is very considerate of the role dental materials and oral heath play in overall health and wellbeing, and utilizes individualized biocompatibility testing for her sensitive patients.

She is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) and American Academy of Facial Esthetics.
